In high school I went to hear a talk in my hometown given by Pete Hammil, the former editor of the New York Post. Afterward, I went up to him. He was signing copies of his book.
I said, “What advice do you have for an aspiring writer?” I handed him my notebook.
He didn’t say anything, he just  wrote this note on my pad and gave it back to me, smiling. It said:
1) Read!
2) Write!
It remains the best advice I’ve ever gotten on becoming a better writer. High-res
